For 2024’s October’s Digbeth First Friday, we screened three films by Mathew Wayne Parkin, Sophie Hoyle, and Seo Hye Lee. ‘I can fit a fist in my mouth’, ‘Aphonia’, and ‘Portland Forecast’ were brought together as an exploration of the nuances of communication, thinking through how language is translated across the screen, as well as between people, landscapes and timeslips, from one subjectivity to another. Each film has integrated captioning and audio description.
Alongside these screenings we invited the three artists to join Hannah Wallis, Grand Union’s Co-Programme Director for an in conversation, speaking to the integration of audio description and open captions within the three pieces of work, and the creative potentiality of access mediums when developing moving-image work. The in conversation is just under 50 minutes long, and is presented with captions.
This event was programmed in collaboration with Radar.
