November Digbeth First Friday: Launch of ‘Companion Culture: Four Actions for Digbeth’

7 November 20256–8pm

On November’s Digbeth First Friday, we will be launching the new Digbeth Cultural Action Plan: ‘Companion Culture – Four Actions for Digbeth’.

Check out the billboards, put up across the area in partnership with JACKARTS, part of BUILDHOLLYWOOD, and grab a copy of Digbeth’s new cultural strategy at venues across Digbeth First Friday.

Over the past year, more than 300 people participated in a range of ways to collectively generate the four actions that we as a community agree need to happen for Digbeth’s culture to thrive. This is a call to action to the many stakeholders who are invested in the development of Digbeth now and in the future and, we hope, the start of open and reciprocal working relationships that will see everyone from individual artists and residents to developers and the city council thrive.

‘Four Actions for Digbeth’ outlines a clear framework to support the continued growth and success of this culturally significant area, grounded on the voices of people who live, work, and spend time here.

The Cultural Action Plan aims to build a companion culture where Digbeth’s diverse ecology works together to collectively create an environment that maintains a healthy, thriving cultural landscape. In turn, supporting the wellbeing of our neighbouring wards and the cultural life of Birmingham.

Here at Grand Union, we will be celebrating this launch with a series of events:

  • Two drop-in performative Operatic Theatre Making Workshops with Infinite Opera from 6.30-7.00pm and 7.30-8.00pm
  • A late night opening and curator’s tour of ‘Languages of Intimacy’ at Birmingham School of Art
  • Join the Corridor8 team in Modern Clay for the launch of their latest publication ‘Barkle and Tranklements: Art Writing from the Midlands’, with performances by Joanne Masding

Find out more about these events in the related projects below.

Our neighbors in Digbeth also have lots going on across this First Friday, demonstrating the huge range of cultural output that happens across this area of Birmingham, so come on down and explore what the night has to offer.

Digbeth comes alive on the First Friday of each month with exhibitions, late-night openings, special events, culture in unexpected spaces, performances, live music, street food and more.
